Swim, Cycle, Run to support COPE Galway
‘What’s great about a Triathlon is the fact that it can be a team or an individual sport which means that it’s open for even the occasional jogger, swimmer or cyclist to take part.
The 3rd annual COPE Galway Triathlon will take place on Sunday 12th June at 9am in Salthill and this year the emphasis is on encouraging teams to take part,’ explains Fintan Maher of COPE Galway.
A new prize category has been added - the fastest family in the team event will win a family weekend stay including 2 nights B&B and evening meal in either the Galway Bay Hotel or it’s sister Hotel the Hodson Bay in Athlone. Last year a number of families took part - one spanned three generations. And there’s a challenge to the local schools, If at least five teams from secondary schools take part there will be a special prize of €250 to the winning team.
Colin and Neil Bolger from Dublin claimed first and second place respectively last year with times of 59:44 and 101:49 so there is the challenge for the professional athletes.
The event starts in Salthill with a 750m Swim followed by a 20K cycle to Furbo and back and finishes off with a 5K run along the promenade and raises funds for Cope Galway the local charity that provides services to the most isolated including a refuge for women and children experiencing domestic violence, accommodation for homeless men and women and supports to enable older people to remain living in their own homes.
